A Shared Experience, Nottingham Playhouse and West Yorkshire Playhouse, in association with Oxford Playhouse, productionBy Helen Edmundson
World Premiere TourBy Helen Edmundson
World Premiere TourDaughter of Mary Wollstonecraft.
Lover of Shelley.
Author of Frankenstein...
Shared Experience brings to life the extraordinary tale of Mary Shelley - and how she came to write one of the greatest stories ever told, aged just 19.
This astonishing new play explores Shelley's remarkable life: her controversial philosopher father, her scandalous elopement aged 16 and what led her to write a novel, so radical in its ideology, that in 1817 she changed the literary landscape forever.
Shared Experience is renowned for bringing classics to the stage in bold, imaginative ways. For Mary Shelley it reunited with award-winning writer Helen Edmundson whose ground-breaking adaptations (Mill on the Floss, Coram Boy, Anna Karenina) have inspired generations of audiences.
A co-production between Nottingham Playhouse, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Shared Experience, Mary Shelley is directed by Polly Teale, Artistic Director of Shared Experience. Celebrated for her potent visual and imaginative style, Polly won the Evening Standard Award for Best Director for her own play After Mrs Rochester, which also won the Time Out Award for Best West End Production.

What a wonderful play. The action, the stageing, the cast, were all magnificent. My husband (we are pensioners) stayed fully awake during the whole of the performance (a first!) so that shows how amazing this play is.

I travelled 90 miles to see Shared Experience. What a treat. I saw the production in Hull on the Saturday evening and it was well worth the distance. A very moving performance, I look forward to the next production.

I would walk on broken glass to see Shared Experience. Thank you so much for coming to Hull. I saw Mary Shelley on Saturday and as usual was blown away. I am outraged that the Wednesday matinee had to be cancelled, you don't deserve that. Shame on you Hull.

A profound performance and an emotional experience. A real reminder of the constant difficulties of society and family expressed in such a heart-wrenching, yet also, humourous way. I wish I had taken my 15 yr old daughter to see this play because I thoroughly enjoyed it; it made me cry and it made me think very deeply about my relationships. Thank you. x

Gone To Earth absolutely blew me away years ago, an experience I will never forget. Speechless recently was slick and stunning. Mary Shelley coming up, can't wait...
