Supporting us
We hope you enjoy watching our work onstage. It's the result of an enormous amount of careful preparation, and represents only part of what we achieve.
Our productions come about as the result of a unique creative process led by our Joint Artistic Directors, Nancy Meckler and Polly Teale. We conduct an intensive period of collaboration through script commission, development and (at a later stage) workshops with performers. The writer works with the director and actors to evolve a visual and imaginative language for the particular piece. Our process is costly, but its vital to assure the quality of what you see onstage.
Central to our work, in addition, are the activities of the Youth & Education department under the leadership of our Associate Director, Kate Saxon. We offer schools workshops, pre- and post-show talks with members of the company, and our trademark Inside Out days at which school parties gain a unique insight into the production process. We also have a Youth Theatre. Young performers, often from Londons socially disadvantaged communities, come to stretch their imaginations in courses led by the companys artists.
Whilst we are funded by Arts Council England (ACE), we must find two-thirds of our income from other sources. We are one of the most financially efficient regularly-funded touring theatre companies, often spending up to 20% less on overheads than average (as shown in annual research published by ACE). But we need your support to ensure our future.
By becoming a Friend or Patron of Shared Experience you directly help us to continue our commitment to excellence both onstage and in our work with young people in schools and our Youth Theatre, as well as enjoying a variety of benefits.
