Shared Experience

Shared Experience have pioneered a thrillingly distinctive performance style that celebrates the union of physical and text-based theatre. From our first production in 1976, we’ve created theatre in this image. Risky, distinctive productions. Vivid with the energy of live performance and the unpredictability of the stage.

The company was founded by Mike Alfreds in 1975 and in 1987 Nancy Meckler became the second Artistic Director, with Polly Teale joining as Nancy’s Joint Artistic Director in 2000. Shared Experience is now steered by a group of Associates including the directors Rebecca Gatward and Kate Saxon, the writer and director Jessica Swale and producer Conrad Lynch. Under their authorship, the company is entering its fourth stage and is creating a new body of work with a fresh voice.

As You Like It is the first of three middlescale tours that we hope will continue to define our future – bringing daring, playful, distinctive theatre to a huge range of audiences across the UK. We aim to excite and inspire more people with the unique delights of live performance and to promote female practitioners through this work.

As well as working with partners and venues we already know, we will target new and unexpected destinations. We will work closely with these venues to grow their audiences and build learning and participation programmes into each show. Our long-term strategy is important: we don’t just want to be a travelling tour, we aim to leave a lasting legacy wherever we go.

Like most other arts organisations we need to look for funding from every source to ensure that we thrive and grow. You can help us build on our ambition to produce bold, innovative and accessible theatre, please visit our website to find out how you can support us.
